Federal and State Governments in Nigeria have released 7228 inmates from the country’s correctional centres between January 2022 and December 2024 as part of efforts to decongest them.
The inmates were released following pardons granted them or following the payments of fines they were hitherto unable to pay.
About 4000 of the released inmates had been languishing in jail because they were unable to pay fines imposed on them by the courts even for minor offences.
Following a gesture initiated by the government and non-governmental organizations, corporate organizations, as part of their corporate social responsibility, contributed N585 million which was used to pay the fines.
