Informal Settlements Project

Informal Settlements are ubiquitous features of the Nigerian landscape, especially in its urban and semi urban areas because that is where majority of the poor make their home. While they vary in the sizes, population and locations, they all have many characteristics which several studies have identified as common to informal settlements the world over.

They are inhabited by low-income and poor people, many of them holding informal jobs though it is not uncommon to find people in the middle income bracket nowadays also among its residents. Many of the houses are poorly built with cheap, worn out second hand materials. The environment is unsanitary and dangerous. Poverty and social deprivation run deep in all the settlements.

The Objectives of the Project are

  • Build the capacity of residents of informal settlements and empower them with civic engagement skills to advocate for the improvement of their political, social and economic rights.

  • Provide legal assistance to indigent residents of informal settlements.

  • Generate resources to provide material assistance to needy residents of the settlements to mitigate their existential deprivations.
