Prison Inmates Project

The 253 Correctional facilities in the country comprising 241 custodial centres, 85 satellite custodial centres, 15 farm centres, two open custodial camps, institutions and training schools were designed to accommodate a maximum of 50,000 inmates but today serve some 80,000 people. Of this 80,000 men and women, 53,836 of them are awaiting trial. Many of the cases awaiting trial could have been resolved without the victims spending long spells in prison if the country’s justice system operated efficiently or if the inmates had legal representation.

The Objectives of the Project are

  • Provide legal assistance to inmates of Correctional Centres.

  • Partner with the Government and other organizations to train inmates about to be discharged in carpentry, tailoring, farming etc to facilitate their smooth reintegration into the society.

  • Seek redress and monetary compensation for inmates who are victims of arbitrary use of power.
